How to get from Bogota to Villa de Leyva by bus

This was the way we travelled from Bogota to Villa de Leyva. It was easy and comfortable and travelling by public transport is a great way to meet local people and lower your carbon footprint.

There are two bus terminals that can get you to Villa de Leyva. The main terminal called Salitre or there is Terminal Satelite Del Norte. We used Terminal Satelite Del Norte because our hotel was closer to it. Salitre is located in the centre of Bogota, giving you more bus options but as the buses have to travel through Bogota they take longer to get to Villa de Leyva.

Obviously travelling to Villa de Leyva by taxi or uber will be more comfortable but the price difference is vast, the price is around 300,000 COP. The time you save is only 30 mins especially if you get the direct bus so in our view travelling by taxi to Villa de Leyva is not worth the additional costs.

Travelling from Bogota to Villa de Leyva by Minibus

We are not big fans of minibuses, they tend to get overcrowded, there is less leg space and the drivers drive too fast. We much prefer big busses that are slower but safer. There are minibuses that go from Bogota to Villa de Leyva, however, the times are not great as they are either very early in the morning or late afternoon.

Los Libertadores bus line has luxury buses that leave twice a day (4:40 am and 2:40 pm). The travel time is about 3 hours and it costs around 30.000 COP.

Can you travel to Villa de Leyva from Bogota Airport?

No, but you can get a taxi (it takes around 20 mins depending on the infamous Bogota traffic) to Salitre Bus Station and then take the bus to Villa de Leyva from there. To be honest, there are enough things to do in Bogota that warrants a stay.

Can I take a day trip from Bogota to Villa de Leyva?

Can I take a day trip from Bogota to Villa de Leyva?

We would not recommend it. You will be stuck in a car or bus for over 7 hours and have very little time to see Villa de Leyva. As I said at the beginning of this post, Villa de Leyva was one of our favourite places in Colombia. With its colonial architecture, huge central plaza and flowered filled cobbled streets, Villa de Leyva is the perfect town to wind down after hectic Bogota city.
